We watched the moon sink behind the shadow of the earth tonight after meeting. Maja explained to us why the moon turns red during a lunar eclipse. It is because the light is being bent around the Earth's atmosphere and since red is the slowest color in the spectrum, it is the color that shows. It gets darker depending on how much dust is in the atmosphere. Here is an interesting story of Christopher Columbus and a lunar eclipse in Jamaica.
